The Island known as South Uist is found in the group of islands known as the Western Isles of Scotland. The main inhabited islands are North Uist, South Uist, Isle of Harris, Lewis, Eriskay, Barra and Benbecula and several hundred other islands which are uninhabited. below I talk about the Isle of South Uist and describe why this is such a great place in which to take a vacation, also I introduce some South Uist hotels.
The Western Isles are unique, they have wholly unique kinds of flora and fauna in a spectacular environment with some of the most beautiful beaches, coves and inlets in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The culture in the islands is an interesting blend of influences from the Gaelic, Norse and Celtic, which could also be said to be somewhat unique.
On the island of South Uist, especially in the west, you will discover the most amazing sandy beaches and a little inland vast areas of land called machair. Machair is unique to this part of the world, it is a kind of immensely fertile, low-lying meadow which features masses of wildflowers during spring and summer. Many folk believe that the beaches found on South Uist are the finest in Scotland, Britain, and possibly Europe.
The island of South Uist is also an incredible place to indulge in a round of golf. Askernish Golf Course is the oldest Hebridean golf course and it is an Old Tom Morris design (the designer of the Old Course at St. Andrews) and some of the best in Scotland. Sadly the golf course was damaged and it requires restoration before it can be played on again but you will find many other golf courses across the islands.
Obviously South Uist offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a vast array of sports. Water sports such as surfing are immensely popular and virtually everyone can enjoy a little walking. Other than golf the most popular sport remains fishing though more and more cyclists appear annually.
Although the island does not feature a supreme choice of galleries and museums it has sufficient to keep visitors entertained during wet weather. Museums such as Kildonan Museum focus on local life and its association with Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart) and Flora MacDonald.
