Scotland, in the UK, is an amazing place to have a short break featuring a large amount of attractions including some of the greatest museums and galleries in the United Kingdom, perfect countryside for hill-walkers, ramblers, mountain climbers, hikers and other folk of that ilk as well as a massive selection of fortified houses, castles, country houses and historical buildings. In the following article I introduce the Isle of Arran and explain why the island is such a superb place to visit.
Arran is a medium sized island and even though it is often grouped in with the islands of the Hebrides it is in fact located in the Firth of Clyde. Because the island’s main industry is tourism it will not surprise you that there is a huge number of Isle of Arran hotels. Although the majority of tourists arrive at the island in order to enjoy the astounding scenery there are also a respectable number of local attractions including; Arran Heritage Museum, Kildonan Castle, Arran Transport Museum and Brodick Castle Gardens.
There are a few population centres, the biggest is Brodick, the site of the ferry terminal with sailings to Ardrossan on the North Ayrshire mainland. Lamlash, situated 4 miles to the south of Brodick, is where you can catch a boat to Holy Island.
Lochranza is most populous settlement in the northern part of the island and will find the ferry terminal where you can sail to Claonaig on the mainland. Please note that the ferry only sails in the summer months. Lochranza is located in a large, and incredibly pretty, bay with the ruins of Lochranza Castle being the highlight.
Blackwaterfoot is the largest village on the west coast of the island. The settlement features a small harbour, a public house (bar) and a garage with a petrol station. Alternative villages to visit are; Catacol (in the north), Corrie (north of Brodick), Kilmory (south coast), Whiting Bay (south of Brodick) and finally Pirnmill where the most beautiful beach on the island is located.
